Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley had a short but legendary career, recording three studio albums with the revered Seattle grunge band, as well as their 1996 MTV Unplugged live album, before his untimely death of a drug overdose in 2002. After the release of the band's 1995 self-titled album, Staley contributed vocals to two more tracks with Alice In Chains, "Get Born Again" and "Died," which both appeared on the 1999 Music Bank box set.
Staley's final studio recording was with a one-off supergroup called Class of '99, which formed to record a song for the soundtrack of the 1999 Robert Rodriguez horror film The Faculty: a cover of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Pt. 2)". The group also included Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello, Jane's Addiction's Stephen Perkins, Porno for Pyros' Martyn LeNoble and Matchbox 20's Matt Serletic.
The group released the cover as a single along with a music video that first aired in January 1999, depicting the members of Class of '99 performing cut with scenes from the movie itself. Though the cover isn't a radical reinvention of Pink Floyd's 1979 anthem, the group adds a grungy heft to it, Staley's distinctive vocals in particular standing out. Watch it above via YouTube.
